B-Mets blank Thunder in opener, 8-0

BINGHAMTON, NY - Erik Goeddel tossed seven shutout innings and the offense provided 14 base hits behind him as the Binghamton Mets beat the Trenton Thunder, 8-0, Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.

Goeddel tossed a season-high seven innings and allowed only two hits as he won his fourth consecutive decision.

His night got off to a rough start against the Thunder; Ramon Flores walked to start the game and Slade Heathcott followed with a single up the middle to put runners at first and second with nobody out.

From that moment on however, Goeddel was untouchable. The righty retired 16 consecutive batters and never let a base runner to get to third base all night.

Meanwhile, the offense broke through against Trenton starter Zach Nuding in the second inning. With two outs, Wilfredo Tovar blooped an RBI single into right-centerfield to score Richard Lucas for the first run of the game. Danny Muno followed with an RBI double down the left field line to put Binghamton up 2-0.

Cesar Puello made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third with a solo home run off the batter's eye in centerfield. Puello leads the team with nine homers and has hit four home runs in as many games against the Thunder this season.

In the seventh inning, the offense gave more support for Goeddel. Alonzo Harris and Tovar started the inning with back-to-back singles. After Muno bunted them over, Josh Rodriguez was intentionally walked to load the bases. Darrell Cecilaini struck out, but Puello came through with a two-out ground-rule double down the left field line to put Binghamton on top, 5-0.

They busted the game open in the bottom of the eighth with three more runs against the Trenton bullpen. Muno hit a two-run double, and Cecilaini added an RBI single to round out the scoring.

Goeddel moves to 5-2 with his victory, and Jack Leathersich and John Church added a scoreless inning of relief each to seal the win. Nuding was tagged with the loss, as the righty fell to 2-7 in 2013.

The B-Mets (34-24) continue their series with the Thunder (31-27) Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM as LHP Mark Cohoon takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Mikey O'Brien for Trenton.
