Sheriff: Endicott Police Merger In Preliminary Stages

Talks to merge the Endicott Police Department into the Broome County Sheriff's Office are in the preliminary stages according to Broome County Sheriff  David Harder.

A resolution to continue discussions was tabled by Endicott Trustee Joseph Nirchi, but the Board will vote on whether to continue discussion next month.

The plan would be to have current Endicott Police stay in Endicott but become employees of the Sheriff's Office. All moves would be lateral, except for two lieutenant positions and the chief's position which would not be available in the Sheriff's Office.

"Everybody gets hired. All you're doing is wearing a different uniform, different buttons. The officers hired from Endicott would still be in Endicott, still watching Endicott, in an increased number," said Endicott Mayor John Bertoni (D).

"Right now we're talking 28 Endicott Police officers to 28 Deputy Sheriff's. We can save them a little over $200,000 alone just in that savings," said Sheriff Harder.

Harder says he hasn't heard back from the head of the Endicott Police Union to set up a meeting with the membership. Endicott Police Chief Michael Cox declined comment.  However, the Endicott Police Department posted a statement on it's Facebook page which reads in part, "We offer police services unmatched by any other department in the area and will continue do so in the face of any outside interference."
