BU Professor Tries to Change Face of Education

(Source: Jason Weinstein)

Binghamton University professor Lijun Yin is looking to change the face of education.

"The tutor is represented by the virtual avatar. And this avatar is talking to the real person and understands the person's expressions and intentions," said Yin.

He is developing software called iDEMO and iTutor to have an avatar teach human students by recognizing their level of understanding through facial recognition.

"If the student feels puzzled than it will decrease the level of the difficulty of the questions. If the student feels very interested and very happy it will raise more different types of questions for the student to answer," said Yin.

Professor Yin has earned a $60,000 grant through SUNY to develop the software, which Yin thinks can also be used to make movies directly from scripts.

"Based on the scripts they will create the movie as the software automatically translates this idea to the movie," said Yin.

Yin is looking to develop his software in a year, then make it available for educational and research use.

"Those systems hopefully can be used for enhances teaching and enhanced learning," said Yin.
