Seton Grad Slavik, 6 other Red Dragons, named All-Americans

CORTLAND -- Seven SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse players have been selected to the 2013 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Div. III All-America team. In addition, four Red Dragons have been chosen to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Mid-Atlantic All-Star Team, led by junior midfielder Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) as Offensive Player of the Year.

Slavik and senior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) were named first-team All-Americans. Junior defenseman Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) was a second-team selection and junior attack Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) was named to the third team. Senior defenseman Craig Sullivan (Duxbury, MA), sophomore long-stick midfielder Patrick Brown (Camillus/West Genesee) and sophomore midfielder Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) were honorable mention.

On the ECAC Mid-Atlantic team, which consists of players from the Upstate and Metro-South regions, Slavik was the Offensive Player of the Year and was joined on the first team by Consul, Kaminski and senior defenseman C.J. Nye (Marcellus).

In addition, Kaminski and Nye have been chosen to compete on the North squad in the annual USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game. That game will be held on Friday, May 24, at 3 p.m. at Cabrini College in Radnor, Pa.

Slavik was a second-team All-American and second-team All-ECAC selection last spring and the 2011 ECAC Upstate Rookie of the Year. This season, he scored a team-high 33 goals and notched 26 assists for 59 points in 20 games. He scored two game-winning goals and picked up 28 ground balls. He ranks fifth nationally in Div. III in GAA and ninth in save percentage. Kaminski finished his career with a 60-7 record. He is first at Cortland in career GAA (5.70) and third in saves (554).

Winterfeldt is an All-American for the second time; he was a third-team choice last season. This spring, he played in 17 games, 15 as a starter, and finished with four goals, two assists, 39 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers.

Consul, a starter in all 20 games, finished third on the team this spring with 54 points. He tied for third with 28 goals and tied for second with 26 assists.

Sullivan was a second-team All-American and second-team All-ECAC choice in 2012. This spring, he played in 18 games, 17 as a starter. He picked up 21 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers.

Brown appeared in all 20 games during the season. He scored six goals and assisted on three others for nine points. He also totaled 32 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.

Nye, a starter in all 20 games, registered three goals, 45 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. He ranked second on the team in ground balls.

Cortland ranked sixth nationally in Div. III in scoring defense, allowing only 6.05 goals per game, and 13th in scoring margin at plus-6.4 goals per contest.

Cortland finished the season 19-1, including its second straight undefeated regular season. The Red Dragons advanced to the NCAA Div. III semifinals before losing in overtime to RIT. Cortland has advanced to at least the national semifinal round in seven of the last eight years and has made 13 straight NCAA tournament appearances.
