Voters decide fate of school budgets

Voters were at the polls Tuesday, deciding to accept or reject school budgets in the many districts throughout the Southern Tier.
As has been the case for the last several years, the tough economic climate is reflected in continuing budget cuts for schools.  Maine-Endwell is proposing a cut of nearly 78 positions and likewise in Binghamton where 55 jobs are on the chopping block.  Some residents support the budget under the circumstances but think more funding needs to come from the state.

"When I was a kid, everything was funded," said Tom Scheibner, a voter in the M-E School District.  "We had field trips, we had decent music departments, and sports.  That's all at risk right now and I'm not comfortable with that, so I fully support the budget."

"I do know that sometimes it's hard for seniors if they think their taxes are going to go up, but my understanding is taxes are not going up a lot, its very reasonable," said Suzanne Collins, a voter in the Binghamton School District.  "So hopefully, everyone will get up and vote in support of the budget."

Polls stayed open throughout Tuesday evening until 8:00 or 9:00 depending on district. Fox 40 News will have all the results of the budget votes listed on our website.
