Horseheads takes home STAC crown
5/18/2013 (Updated 10:58:44 PM)BINGHAMTON -- While the B-Mets are on the road, the Blue Raiders made themselves quite at home at NYSEG Stadium as they beat Vestal 10-1 to take home the STAC Baseball Championship.
Brett Wieland went 3-3 with 5 RBIs including two RBI doubles, both off the wall to help aid the Horseheads efforts in the final. On the mound Kevin Boulas pitched a complete game only giving up the one run in the 7th inning, and limited the Golden Bears to just 4 hits.
The Blue Raiders bats were equally as hot in the semi-finals beating Seton Catholic Central 13-7. The score stood at 13-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th when the Saints plated two. Then, with two outs, Seton rallied to score 4 more but Brian Hartrick hit a chopper to the shortstop and Finals hero Boulas.
The runner-up Golden Bears beat Chenango Valley 6-3 in the 10:00 am semi-final. With bases loaded in the 6th, Troy Wilson hit a hard grounder past the shortstop to score two runs easily. A throwing error on the play not only allowed the third run to score, but moved Wilson to third where he was later stranded. But the three run inning was enough to give Vestal the lead for good.
But the Blue Raiders were just too strong for the Golden Bears in the finals as they claim their first STAC title since 2010. After the game head coach Jeff Limoncelli praised the team's resurgence at the plate as they tallied 14 hits in each game.
"We faced good pitching so we took the right approach and didn't try to overswing," he said. "We have not been hitting as of late, but the kids have worked real hard and put a lot of time in and they picked a really good day to get hot."
The STAC Champs will have 10 days off before starting their run at a Section IV Title.
