Kopernik Helps Launch Students Interest In Science

A day at Kopernik Observatory helps launch students interest in science.

Tioga County Middle School students got to watch a rocket blast off and gaze into telescopes on Wednesday as a part of "Space Day."  They also got to handle NASA artifacts.

Educators say it is important to inspire kids to pursue a career in science and technology.

"I think it's been identified, especially here in the US, STEM education is really where the growth is going to be," said Drew Deskur, Executive Director of the Kopernik Observatory.

"I'm kind of leaning towards science a bit more.  Maybe an astronomer, it would be really cool to be working with all this stuff," said student Paul Girolaol.

This is the fifth year of the four day event, which is sponsored by Lockheed Martin.
