Glenwood Elementary Students Gets a Visit by Vestal Supervisor

(Source: Kate Thornton)

Third graders from Mrs. Donahue's class had a special guest Tuesday morning.

Vestal Town Supervisor John Shaffer came to the class to meet with the students and talk to them about their vision for the community.

Many of the students wrote to Shaffer about what they would like to see happen or change in the town.

"I wrote that we should have a hospital closer to us, because my mom and dad usually go to the Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton.  And, if there's an emergency, someone could die before you get there," said 9-year old third grader Avery Tanton.

"I learned how Mr. Shaffer got to be the town supervisor, and about everything my friend's wanted in the community.  I just wish the community can grow bigger and better," said 9-year old third grader Ashley Waddell.

The students were very eager to share their stories with Shaffer about the flood of September 2011.

Vestal was one of the hardest hit areas from Tropical Storm Lee, especially the Twin Orchards area.

Shaffer explained to the kids about the recent funds granted by the state to buyout homes destroyed by flood waters.

"People have suffered long enough from (the flood).  We can save a little bit financially.  You'll never be able to bring back everything they've lost, but this is definitely a plus," said Shaffer.

Shaffer said the board will discuss different options for the future of the land that will be bought out.
