Governor Cuomo Calls to Expand Abortion Rights

Governor Cuomo's Reproductive Health Act proposes making abortion a subsection of the Public Health Law, as it is currently the only medical procedure in the state that is treated as part of the Penal Code.

Under this law, doctors performing abortions would face the same standards as doctors performing any other medical procedure.

"And if you have a doctor that doesn't follow medical standards that doesn't treat the patient badly, a doctor of any type whether the doctor is doing an appendectomy, or cardiology, or a pregnancy termination then that doctor can still be prosecuted," said CEO of Family Planning, Debra Marcus.

While some states currently have trigger laws, which ensure the immediate criminalization of abortion if Roe vs. Wade was ever overturned, the Reproductive Health Act would do the opposite.

"It would codify what we now have," said Director of Amy Cousins Clinic, Peg Johnson.

Those opposing Governor Cuomo's agenda argue that this act may take away some basic freedoms.

It's really interfering with freedom of religion just as the federal Health and Human Services Act limits the freedom to practice their faith and their religion," said Pastor of Saint James Church, Father John Donovan.

Supporters of the act say that it's passing would ratify New York State's support for women.

"It's the kind of thing in New York State that we believe in. If women don't have control over their reproductive lives then they don't have lives," said Peg Johnson.
