Sixth Annual Bike Day
5/11/2013 (Updated 10:55:51 PM)BINGHAMTON -- We know the benefits exercise has on the mind and body.
About 200 kids and grownups are getting a healthy start to kick off summer.
They all got free bikes and bike helmets Saturday. It was all part of the Sixth Annual George F. Johson Dream Center's Bike Day. Volunteers showed the kids how to properly ride. Organizers say the event is designed to help kids easily get to parks and programs. Over 700 bikes have been donated since the program started by the Sarah Jane Johnson Church.
"We just put the word out to the community that we collect bicycles year round and every year on the second Saturday of May we have Bike Day. It's actually not a bike give away, it's a bike safety day. So the kids will learn how to ride safely and learn the rules of the road." - Patricia Cardin, Founding Director of GFS Dream Center
The bikes will help youth get to free summer lunch and youth development programs put on by the Sarah Jane Johnson Church.
