BU Seniors Use Bioengineering to Help Disabled 5/9/2013 (Updated 7:07:14 PM)
Binghamton University students are using their bioengineering skills to help the disabled.
A group of seniors has created a specialized raft for a local woman with cerebral palsy. The hammock-style device contours to her body and gives her complete support. It allows her to more easily enjoy her favorite activity: floating in the water.
"We researched cerebral palsy and found out what someone who is diagnosed with cerebral palsy, what their specific needs would be. We did a lot of materials research and testing. We used polyester mesh. You could basically buy all these materials in a store,"said student Jacob Molzen.
"I've tried it in the water and it works really well," said recipent Virginia Gormly.
Other senior design projects included a shopping cart mobility device and a cooling garment.
