Bearcats with shot at AEast Sunday

VESTAL, N.Y.  Freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh homered twice and junior pitcher Demi Laney won her 15th game of the season as Binghamton (29-14, 14-3 AE) split a doubleheader against Albany (34-13, 14-2)  in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats won the opener 3-1 but fell short in the nightcap 3-2. Sundays noon game, therefore, will determine the conferences regular-season champion.

Binghamtons 29 wins is its most since going 29-12 during the 1999 season. In addition, the victory in the first game extended the Bearcats win streak to a season-high nine games.

Laney, who improved to 15-5, has now recorded the highest win total by a Binghamton pitcher since Margaret Yerdon also won 15 games during the 1999 season. Against the Great Danes in the opener, Laney scattered one run on four hits and struck out eight batters.

McIntosh jump started the offense with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Three innings later, junior third baseman Mikala King made it 3-0 with a solo home run.

Alexa Toole broke the shutout with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. Laney, however, retired four of the final six batters to preserve the victory.

The loss was tagged to Brittany MacFawn, but she would start off the second game with a vengeance. She had a no hitter through three innings and held Binghamton to just four hits in the nightcap.
Offensively, Maggie Cocks was credits with a pair of RBI on a fielders choice in the top of the third inning, giving Albany a 2-0 lead. One inning later, Lindsey Stout made it 3-0 with a RBI single.
McIntosh struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two run home run. The Bearcats, however, left two men on base at the end of the inning. From there, MacFawn retired six of the last seven batters, raising her record to 25-7.

The loss was tagged to Rhoda Marsteller, who is now 9-5.
Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh hit a team-best .500 during the doubleheader. She went 2-for-4 with a walk. McIntosh and senior outfielder Jessica Phillips both went 2-for-5 (.400).
