Severe Weather Awareness Wrap Up

Irene and Lee were milestones many of us in this area would like to forget, but as devastating as catastrophic flooding is, it can also be seen as a learning tool.

Flooding is the number one killer of weather related fatalities. In the flood of 06, three people in New York died, but because of advance warning and swift action, no lives were lost in the flood of 2011.

Many of you who have lived here for years know at what stage your home floods. If you don't, the national weather service has all the information on past flooding and what areas flood at what stage of the river on their website.

Always monitor the forecast to see how bad the flood could actually be and what measures you need to take like moving items to higher ground.

Never walk or drive through flood waters. You don't know what's in that water-- raw sewage or the road could have a sink hole. Follow the number one rule: turn around, don't drown.

It's always a good idea to have a battery operated weather radio for continuous updates or get alerts straight to you phone by signing up for ny-alert.

This concludes our series on New York severe weather awareness week.  You can find all the information we've talked about this week on our website and on the national weather service's website
