BCC Holds Annual Sleep Out
5/1/2013 (Updated 11:00:10 PM)It's one thing to have sympathy for the homeless, it's quite another to experience it for yourself.
At Broome Community College Wednesday evening, students, faculty, staff and others were setting up tents, and even cardboard boxes, to sleep in, all night, to raise money for the homeless.
Officials say homelessness is increasing in Broome County, for folks from a variety of backgrounds and that includes veterans.
"Last year we had 76 military veterans who self-identified as being homeless," said Wesley Warren, the Chairman of Criminal Justice and Homeland Security at BCC. "Throughout Broome, Chenango, and Otsego we have 1864 veterans who are homeless, so it's a big problem."
"You can either be part of the solution or part of the problem. If you do absolutely nothing, then you're part of the problem," said Tyrone King, a student at BCC.
The Sleepout is an annual event at BCC.
