BU Baseball loses to Marist, 9-2

VESTAL, N.Y.  Visiting Marist (22-17-1) snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fourth inning and the Red Foxes tacked on two more in each of the fifth and sixth frames to defeat Binghamton (21-18) 9-2 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Marist outhit BU 12-7 and benefited from five extra-base hits, including a two-run inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning. The Bearcats, who have dropped four of their last five, were held to four hits over their final six scoreless innings.

Down 2-0 after the Red Foxes scored a pair on three singles in the first, BU loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame but an attempted bunt single resulted in an inning-ending putout with three stranded. After leaving another runner at second in the second, BU struck for the tying runs in the third.

Junior DH Shaun McGraw ripped a 3-2 fastball into the Bearcats bullpen in left field to make it 2-1. After junior first baseman Brian Ruby drove a pitch to the gap in left center for a double, junior shortstop John Howell followed with an RBI single to center, plating Ruby with the tying run.

But Marist opened the fourth inning with a double and RBI triple and before it was over, the visitors had plated three runs on three hits and led 5-2. A walk, hit batter and two hits produced two more runs in the fifth and the Red Foxes finished the scoring with two more runs in the sixth courtesy of the inside-the-park home run, which banged off the wall in left center, eluding two BU outfielders.
Howell went 2-for-4 with an RBI, the lone BU player with more than one hit. McGraws home run was his team-high fourth of the season.

Freshman Jake Cryts (3.1 IP) took the loss. Classmate Tsuyoshi Horibata tossed the final four innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
