The Cost of Prom

It's all about the perfect dress, but what will the perfect prom cost you?

According to a survey conducted by Visa, families in the Northeast are expected to pay the most in the country--an average of $1,528 on prom this year.

"This is a one time thing, this night, and they want to feel special," said Melissa Cartagena of Tom's Coffee, Cards and Gifts.

At Tom's Coffee, Cards and Gifts in Binghamton, girls are handing over hundreds.

"We've had a few $350 dresses.  But, anywhere from $150 to $295 is where it stands," said Cartagena.

Then there's the hair.

"They book their appointments and they are excited about getting their hair done," said Jill Darling of The White Rose Day Spa and Hair Design.  "They bring in pictures of what they want."

At The White Rose salon in Vestal, it doesn't stop there.

"Now a lot of girls want to come in and have their makeup done as well and nails done-- all the finishing touches," said Darling.

Here an updo starts at $50.  Add makeup and that's another $30.  Adding nails tacks on another $35.

How about getting to the prom?

At Uptown Limo, prices range from $75-$95 per person for a fiive hour rental. Owner Robert Palencar says he see's most students covering the cost.

No matter who's paying, those expenses alone put the price of being a prom queen at over $500.  Don't forget the prom ticket and pictures will cost you too.

"There's more to it now. A lot more expensive," said Darling.

"It's all worth it because it's a memory you'll remember for a lifetime," said Robert Palencar of Uptown Limo.
