Prom Season in the Southern Tier

It's officially prom season here in the Southern Tier and for a lot of juniors and seniors, its time to search for that perfect dress..

According to a survey conducted by Visa, spending on the high school tradition has grown for a second straight year.  According to the survey Americans will sped an average of $1,139 per family on prom.

At Tom's Coffee, Cards and Gifts in Binghamton, they say their business has doubled this year  and they say most girls are spending a few hundred for a dress and accessories.

"We've had a few $350 dresses.  Those are more of the princess poof dresses but anywhere from 150 to 295 is where it stands," said Melissa Cartagena of Tom's Coffee, Cards and Gifts. "It's a once in a lifetime thing.  They want to feel special on this night and we try to help them do that.  We cater to our customers."

That Visa survey shows families in the Northeast spend more on prom than anywhere else in the country, an average of $1,528.
