Lawmakers propose raising smoking age

Following the recent announcement from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York State is now also planning on raising the legal smoking age to 21.

Right now across the state, the legal age to buy tobacco is 18, with the exception of Onondaga, Suffolk, and Nassau Counties where you must be 19.  The change in law is in hopes of preventing kids from smoking in the first place.  But a local retailer and some smokers don't think the change in law  will change much.

"Ask some kids that are 18 years old currently if alcohol is available to them when the legal age is 21 and you'll have your answer," said John Cordisco, Owner of Cordisco's Corner Store.  "That is the reality of the world, you can only legislate so much."

"It's going to cause a lot of problems with kids that already do it when they're 18 but they're not going to be able to get it so they're going to resort to trying to get it from their parents or get it other ways," said Nate Cleary of Johnson City.

"This is just one more example of the government trying to parent everybody," said Jason Beck also of Johnson City.  "I think parents should do their job and inform their kids about that."

Cordisco says this move is busy work by lawmakers and that there are much bigger issues that should be higher on the priority list.
