It was almost over before it started. In the very first round of the main event at UFC 159, Endicott native Jon "Bones" Jones beat Chael Sonnen by TKO to defend his title for the fifth time.
The victory was judged by many as unsurprising. What was surprising to many, including Jones, was the champ's injury. Jones suffered a compound fracture of his left big toe at some point during the fight and only realized it during the interview with Joe Rogan after the official victory announcement.
While he says the adrenaline kept him from feeling the pain, Jones is lucky that the referee did not see the broken toe. Even though it is just a toe, a compound fracture could have easily ended the fight and cost Jones his belt. As it is though, his next fight will come with the opportunity to tie the record for consecutive Light Heavyweight Title defenses with six.
Fox 40's Eva Zaccaria had post fight reaction from both the champ and his challenger.
