Workers Memorial Day 2013

BINGHAMTON -- The community came together Sunday to remember the victims of Binghamton's deadliest fire and those who have died in the line of duty.

2013 marks 100 years since the fire at the Binghamton Clothing Company that claimed the lives of 33 people.

Members of the community gathered on the River Trail for a memorial service Sunday afternoon.  This year's Workers Memorial Day ceremony was held in honor of fallen Binghamton Firefighter John Janos.  The group tolled a bell for all of those who have perished on the job, and called for better safety standards for workers.

"We're looking at legislature issues, we're looking at enforcement issues, and we're looking at making sure the corporations are following the rules.  [We make sure] tragedies such as what happened in Texas, with the factory fire and worker deaths on the job, no longer happen. We do all we can to stop that," said Lee Conrad, President of the Broome Tioga Federation of Labor.

Less than two weeks ago, 14 people were killed in an explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas.

Officials say 13 people die on the job every day across the country.
