BINGHAMTON -- It was a day of remembrance for local policemen.
Officers from across the Southern Tier came out to Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial Methodist Church Sunday to honor their own. They lit candles for all 35 policemen who have died while on duty since 1845. Policemen say it's important to carry on the tradition, especially for those who passed long ago.
"We're not sure there's too many people around-- even family members that might still be in the area who would remember or even know that relative was part of this and gave their life in the line of duty. So it's a way to remember them," said Paul Burnett, a retired Johnson City Police Offer.
Sunday's event kicked off Southern Tier Police Memorial Week. There will be a flag raising Monday at 11 a.m. in front of the Johnson City Police Department.
