Bearcats rally falls short, lose rubber game

VESTAL, N.Y.Visiting Stony Brook (17-28, 9-12 AE) belted a three-run home run, built an 8-0 lead and defeated Binghamton 8-4 in the rubber game of the three-game set Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss dropped Binghamton (21-17, 10-10 AE) into fourth place in the conference standings, just 1.5 games ahead of the Seawolves for the final playoff spot with nine league games remaining.

Stony Brook took advantage of a rare off-outing from senior right hander Jay Lynch, who surrendered nine hits and four runs in five innings. Lynch (4-4, 2.51 ERA) entered the day having allowed just one earned run in his previous 21 innings but Stony Brook got to him for two runs in the first and two more in the third. The Seawolves broke the game wide open with four runs in the sixth - three courtesy of a three-run home run from first baseman Kevin Courtney, who also hit a grand slam on Saturday.

Down 8-0, BU had a chance to take a chunk out of that deficit in the bottom of the sixth when they strung together three hits and loaded the bases. But after a two-out RBI single by junior shortstop John Howell, the Bearcats left the bases full and still trailed 8-1.

Binghamton was limited to the one run on three hits until putting three on the board in the ninth and forcing the Seawolves to dip into their bullpen twice. A leadoff walk to junior first baseman Brian Ruby and a double by Howell put runners on first and second. After a shallow pop-up ate up the first out, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz walked to load the bases. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden then ripped a two-run double to the wall in right center, giving BU life. Down 8-3, freshman third baseman David Schanz brought in the fourth run on a groundout before a comebacker stranded Blanden and ended the game.

Howell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Blanden moved his RBI count to 20 with the two knocked in.

Stony Brook outhit BU 12-6.

Binghamton plays the first of two non-conference home games this week when BU hosts Marist at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
