Will Drive Sober Apps Come to New York?

(Source: Jason Weinstein)

The future of preventing drunk driving is here.

"They're another tool, especially for the younger generation to get information," said Broome County Stop DWI Coordinator Chris Marion.

New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Georgia have released Drive Sober apps. These apps have information on drunk driving penalties, options for taxis or designated drivers, and a way to report other drunk drivers.

"The educational part of it - if we can educate the public and try to help them understand these things, what the penalties may be, what different variables may have an effect on the level of intoxication," said Lt. Kathleen Newcomb of the Broome County Sheriff's Office.

They also have blood alcohol estimators - based on information you input such as gender, weight, and how much you've had to drink. Officials aren't big fans of this feature

"We discourage anyone from trying to guesstimate their BAC (blood alcohol content)," said Marion.

"There's many different variables. It could be your gender, what you've eaten, your mood. There's a lot that goes into that. How much sleep you've had," said Newcomb.

Another danger of relying on the blood-alcohol estimator is that you don't need a BAC of .08 to be arrested for the charge of Driving While Impaired.

"There is a range of different charges on the books in New York State than can be charged," said Newcomb.

Marion says he'll push the state Stop-DWI association to have New York develop it's own Drive Sober app. But you don't need the latest technology to stop drunk driving.

"You can't get an accurate reading. If you're planning on going out to drink you need to plan a safe ride home which doesn't include you drinking," said Marion.

"Our message is if you're going to drink, don't drive," said Newcomb.
