BU Soft: Bearcats sweep doubleheader at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y.  Junior second baseman Jessica Bump, junior third baseman Mikala King and freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee all homered, powering Binghamton (23-13) to a 7-1, 7-3 sweep of Colgate (15-25) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Eaton Street Field. The second game was shortened to five innings due to darkness.

Bump hit a team-best .571 (4-for-7) with a double and a home run. She also scored three times and stole three bases. For the season, Bump is now hitting a team-best .372 with nine home runs and 35 RBI.

Freshman Griffin McIver went 3-for-6 (.500) and drove in three runs while freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh went 3-for-7 (.429) and extended her hitting streak to a career-high six games. Chaffee, meanwhile, was 2-for-5 (.400). As a team, the Bearcats finished the afternoon with a collective batting average of .367.
In the opener, Bump broke open a scoreless tie when she led off the top of the third inning with a home run. One frame later, Harbaugh made it 2-0 with a RBI single.

King clubbed a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, increasing the lead to 4-0. McIver, meanwhile, keyed a three-run seventh inning with a two-run single.

Colgate broke the shutout on a RBI single by Eileen Ornousky with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Junior pitcher Demi Laney scattered one run on seven hits and struck out five batters to improve to 11-5 on the season. She did not issue a walk.

The loss was tagged to Megan Carnasi, who is now 2-9.
In the second game, Chaffee put the Bearcats on the board with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was her eighth home run of the season.

The Raiders, however, scored a run in each of the next three frames to tie the game. Colgate had only two hits during that span but one of them was a solo home run by Alex Gadiano in the second inning.

Bump led off the top of the fourth inning with a double. Two batters later, she broke the tie when she scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan.

In the fifth inning, Binghamton blew the game open with three more runs. McIver made it 5-3 on a RBI double. She later scored on a single by sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis. Bump completed the scoring when she singled home Friis two batters later.
Senior pitcher Kate Price tossed three scoreless innings to improve to 5-4 on the season. Courtney OConnell took the loss and is now 8-8.
