Broome County Legislature Votes on Bath Salts
4/19/2013 (Updated 7:28:34 PM)BINGHAMTON -- The Broome County Legislature is taking steps to curb drug use in the area.
The Legislature approved a ban on bath salt substances at Thursday night's meeting. There is a state ban on four of the substances that make up the designer drugs, which contain synthetic chemicals that are similar to amphetamine. The vote was passed unanimously and the county ban is an extention of the state list of prohibited substances. Legislator Matthew Pasquale introduced the legislation. He says the drug is particularly popular with area kids between the ages of 18 and 27.
"It's going to give law enforcement in Broome County another tool to go after merchants who are peddling this poison to our children," said Matthew Pasquale.
The law also prohibits the possession of herbal incense, synthetic hallucinogens and salvia divinorem.
