Former UE Graduate Remembered by Fellow Submarine Veterans
4/13/2013 (Updated 10:06:42 PM)ENDICOTT -- A former Union-Endicott High School graduate was remembered Saturday for sacrificing his life for our country.
Local veterans gathered at the American Legion in Endicott for their annual tribute to 26-year-old Joseph Fusco. He was one of 129 killed when the USS Thresher sank in Cape Cod in 1963. It was the US Navy's worst submarine disaster. The group tolled a bell for all the boats that have lost men since the 1920's, and then paid a visit to the memorial at Union-Endicott High School.
"He was always our big, big brother, the brother we didn't have. Fond memories. It's a reminder of what sacrifices our servicemen go through. Some pay the ultimate price, and this is what happened here," said Anthony Fusco, cousin of Joseph Fusco.
Joseph Fusco was a 1954 graduate of Union-Endicott High School, and he was survived by his parents and three children.
