Family Planning officially opens under new name
4/8/2013 (Updated 10:58:56 PM)BINGHAMTON -- Family Planning of South Central New York officially began operation under it's new name today with a ribbon cutting.
The former Planned Parenthood affiliate left the national organization and changed its name at the beginning of March after the national organization began requiring that all their affiliates make on-site abortions available. Last week, the national organization of Planned Parenthood made it known that another of it's affiliates, Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes was planning to open a facility in the Broome County area, potentially taking patients away from Family Planning of South Central New York, but those plans are still up in the air.
"We certainly hope not, because it's not necessary," said Debra Marcus, CEO, Family Planning of South Central New York. "This is really not about competition. This is about making sure services are well delivered. The vital, essential, life saving cancer screenings, contraception, education, all the services that we have delivered so well for 75 years, we want to be able to continue to deliver those."
Marcus says she has contacted officials from the Planned Parenthood affiliate and has not received official word on their intent to come to Broome County.
