Senator Libous On The State Budget
3/24/2013 (Updated 11:23:59 PM)After coming to a tentative agreement on Wednesday-- law makers were expected to finalize the $135 billion dollar state budget on Monday. However written reports suggest they will be negotiating throughout the week.
The State Senate had a three hour session on Sunday reportedly passing budget bills on public protection and a bill that implements the transportation, economic development and environmental conservation budget.
The tentative agreement made Wednesday included $650 million in tax breaks for the middle class and small businesses. Over time-- it would also increase minimum wage to nine dollars an hour.
Fox 40 caught up with State Senator Tom Libous after the tentative deal was reached earlier this week.
"It's very solid, the work construction chips money for roads and bridges will help the Southern Tier Economy and it's a good solid budget in a time where the economy is still pretty soft. So, we filled a two billion dollar deficit-we're still doing a number of good things," said Senator Libous.
Libous had also said that he was proud the state would pass a budget early and on time for the third year in a row. We now know that may not be the case.
The senate will meet again Monday morning. A new budget must be passed by both houses before the start of the state's fiscal year on April first.
