Binghamton School District Might Cut 54.0 Positions
3/19/2013 (Updated 11:18:27 PM)
Here's the proposal: Up to 32.4 positions eliminated through layoffs--another 34.4 positions gone through retirements--and just eleven of those to be filled--
The total? --up to 54.9 positions fewer for the Binghamton School District.
During a Board of Education meeting Tuesday evening, the school district continued to wrestle with a 5.3 million dollar gap in its 2013-14 budget
The board cites a loss of more than 21 million dollars in financial aid since 2008, and, a 37 percent increase in the teachers' retirement system --along with the continuation of unfunded mandates.
The school board hopes that some of the unknowns concerning funding will be cleared up when the state budget is delivered, possibly by Thursday.
