BINGHAMTON -- The Binghamton University Crew Club had a meet Saturday morning--but they left their boats behind for this one.
The team hosted the 7th Annual John McKenna Memorial Run. Around 600 people were expected to participate in the 5K race at Recreation Park.
John McKenna the Fourth was a BU graduate and captain in the United States Marines. He was killed in combat in Iraq while on his third tour in August of 2006. McKenna was a member of the crew club while a student. One current team member says she always keeps John in mind.
"I never knew John but I think about that all the time-- when I plan the race. What if one of these people who I knew who are here had been killed? So that's why we run the race and why we do this all for John," said Kelsey Wasilweski.
McKenna graduated from BU in 1998. Proceeds from the race will go to the Captain John McKenna the Fourth Military Courtesy Room at the Albany Airport and the Binghamton Crew Club.
