BU Men's Lax can't get it done at Colgate
3/12/2013 (Updated 3/13/2013 6:15:42 PM)
Down four at half, Binghamton was unable to get anything rolling on offense and had no solution to stopping Baum. Colgate effectively scored the first two goals of the third quarter, both from Baum, to take an 8-2 lead just two and half minutes in. After a goal from red shirt junior Matt Springer cut the hosts lead to five, Baum answered once again with his fifth tally of the game. As time winded down in the third, Walsh found the back of the net next for Colgate, securing a 10-3 lead they wouldnt relinquish.
Both Michael Antinozzi and Dongian tallied goals in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too much down the stretch. Colgate snapped the Bearcats two-game winning streak with the 12-5 victory in large part to their time of possession. The Raiders outshot Binghamton 42-20 on the afternoon and won the faceoff battle 13-to-8.
Junior goalie Max Schefler turned in his fourth double digit save performance of the season with 11 stops Tuesday. Juniors Alex Doerflein and Garrett Augustyn both scooped up a team-high four ground balls and are one-two on the team, respectively, in that category.
In the first half, the Bearcats started off on the right footing early at Andy Kerr Stadium. After a successful clear attempt, Shane Warner sprinted towards the middle of the field and launched a diving shot past Colgates keeper Conor Murphy. Warners goal just three minutes in, however, would be all the scoring the Bearcats could muster in the opening frame as the hosts controlled most of the possession. The Raiders regained the lead off a pair of goals from Baum. The three-time All-Patriot league performers second score came as a result of a BU turnover. The Raiders would tally one more score in the quarter, taking a 3-1 advantage after 15 minutes of play.
Colgate continued its strong play in the second, scoring a pair of goals in the first five minutes to take the 5-1 lead. After an 18-minutes scoreless drought, Binghamton finally ended Colgates 5-0 run with a goal from Donigan. The junior midfielder beat a couple defenders as he dodged left and fired a low liner into the back of the cage.
The Raiders responded with a goal of their own and carried a 6-2 lead into halftime. Binghamton was outshot 21-7 in the first half and committed 10 turnovers in the wet, rainy conditions in Hamilton. Schefler collected six saves in the first half.
