11th Annual Southern Tier Scholastic Science Fair
3/2/2013 (Updated 10:52:04 PM)
Broome Community College hosted the 11th annual Southern Tier Scholastic Science Fair, drawing nearly 100 5th through 12th graders, the event's biggest turnout ever. The budding scientists displayed projects on a wide range of topics, including electrolytes, dog intelligence, even acne treatment. Local professionals judged and awarded prizes.
"With all the cuts in schools right now, there's not a whole lot of extra-curricular activities, certainly not science activities. So this is is a way a student can do a project at school and expand it and interact with other people," said Jennifer Musa, Chairperson of the Souther Tier Scholastic Science Fair.
"I didn't want to do another project that we learn about everyday in science class. Like that's interesting and all, but I want to do something I can use everyday," said Jamie Peters of Seton Catholic Central.
Event organizers say that about 30 percent of the participants will be qualified to go onto compete in another regional science fair.
