Friday begins Chow's biggest food drive of the year.
The Feinstein challenge is a nationwide program that provides grants based on the amount of food and dollars collected during March and April.
Chow says the challenge is needed, since the economic downturn has resulted in a greater demand for food from a wider segment of Broome county's population.
"It will help us fill our shelves at a time when we're very vulnerable. There's no collections, no holidays, at that time of the year. Clients are coming in, our numbers are going up and it's just away to get food on our shelves," said Supervisor of Emergency Services, Kathy Pfaffenbach.
