Binghamton YWCA Receives Grant for Breast Cancer Outreach Program
2/27/2013 (Updated 2/28/2013 1:03:38 PM)BINGHAMTON -- With a history of breast cancer in her family, Loriann Huls was concerned. But today she got a free mammogram -- thanks to grant money donated by the Avon Breast Health Outreach Program to the ENCOREplus program at the YWCA.
"I said it's time to find out whether I have something or not," said Huls.
Huls is one of thousands of women in the area served by ENCOREplus-- a program designed to educate women about breast cancer and break down barriers to get screenings.
"Early detection really is their best protection if they can catch it early," said program coordinator Crystal Lown.
The program has been supported for 19 years by the Avon Breast Health Outreach Program.
"We find a lot of people have lost their insurance because of losing their jobs, so we have grown tremendously in the past few years," said Lown.
But she says they are seeing fewer people being diagnosed at an earlier stage.
"We've gotten that out there and educated enough women, we hope..and still do," said Lown.
And they will stop at nothing to help as many women as possible.
"If you can't get there, we'll pick you up, we'll sit with you, we'll take you home," said Lown.
Program coordinators say getting a breast exam is especially important for women between the ages of 50 and 64 because for them, breast cancer is the single leading cause of death in the US.
"It takes 20 minutes, and the other 364 days of the year you're relieved," said Huls.
