Artifacts Unearthed at MacArthur Elementary
2/26/2013 (Updated 11:04:00 PM)BINGHAMTON -- BU's Director of the Public Archaeology Facility Nina Versaggi was called in to search the MacArthur Elementary School site as part of the environmental impact process before reconstruction on the school damaged in the 2011 flood can begin.
Versaggi discovered artifacts as much as 4500 years old, but she was not surprised by her findings, "We expected to find the site because we knew across the highway we had a much larger site there."
She is hopeful that the findings will help the rebuilding process along.
"Because they are able to fence this off and make it a protected green space, it will facilitate them moving forward with the school reconstruction plans."
"Green" means that the site is blocked off from any further digging. But Versaggi assures that won't hinder it's educational capabilities though.
"We will be able to work with students in the classroom to give presentations and slides on how we actually excavated and found the site. We can show the artifacts. We can actually have an exhibit."
Versaggi says the byproducts she found were likely flakes left over from making tools.
"They would take a piece and actually use something like an antler to shape it a little better and the smaller flakes come off during the shaping process."
She thinks these are flakes from projectile points like arrowheads or spears which were found at the nearby John Moore Farm site.
Nina Versaggi is fairly certain that the MacArthur site is actually part of the John Moore Farm site and that the two were merely separated by the construction of Rte. 201 and the Vestal Parkway. It is quite possible that residents of the Southern Tier are driving over history every day.
