Immigrant Family Home Saved by Tax Deal
2/25/2013 (Updated 9:23:16 PM)
Volodymyr Kurylo wrote the more than 16-thousand dollar check to Broome County for back taxes and fees.
Kurylo's sister and disabled brother are currently at the home on 9 Arthur Street.
Kurylo says he had a check ready with the full amount in December.
But because of state and local real estate laws the house was on the verge of being auctioned off this spring.
The Broome County Legislature then voted to change the county's sellback law, before voting last week to grant Kurylo permission to pay the back taxes and fees.
"We're happy to have it back. We're happy that other people from now on would be able to redeem their properties up until 30 days before the auction of their homes. We're happy about all that," said Kurylo.
The closing is finished, although Kurylo still has an issue with the county over almost three thousand in what they call rent-related costs from January and February.
For now Kurylo says the family plans on opening a nice bottle of wine Monday night to celebrate it's victory.
