Senator Kirsten Gillibrand Talks About the Sequester
2/22/2013 (Updated 7:10:56 PM)
The round of mandatory spending cuts set to take effect March 1st if congress can't reach a deal to avoid them.
Sequestration would target all federal spending, including defense.
Many worry that big local employers such as Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems could be affected.
On Wednesday Senator Schumer outlined ending subsidies to oil companies as an alternative to the cuts.
Friday, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand echoed that saying that this is not a partisan issue.
"I think we need to be able to cut spending in a smarter way," Gillibrand said. "We should be cutting waste and fraud. We should be looking for ways to end the loopholes that companies take advantage of that send jobs overseas. Those are just simple changes that I think make good sense and they're not Democratic or Republican ideas, they're just good ideas. We need to come together in a bipartisan way to come up with solutions like that."
Gillibrand says that she expects congress will work across the aisle to come up with a reasonable solution.
