BU makes things close, but fall to Stony Brook
2/13/2013 (Updated 11:00:00 PM)
The game, which was televised regionally by Time Warner Cable Sports, marked the fourth straight setback for the Bearcats.
Down by as many as 13 points late in the first half, Binghamton came storming back and pulled to within two points at the final media timeout of the game. From there, however, the Bearcats were unable to draw even down the stretch.
It was disappointing, head coach Nicole Scholl said. We played a lot better in the second half but didnt show the defensive intensity in the first half.
Stony Brook took a 36-25 into the half. Chikilra Goodman led all scorers with 10 points at the break and the Seawolves scored 17 of their points off of Bearcat turnovers.
Sophomore forward Sherae Swinson scored eight points in the first 4:13 of the second half, pulling the Bearcats to within 44-36. Later in the half, she sank a pair of free throws, trimming the deficit to 55-50 with 4:51 remaining.
It was junior guard Vaneeshia Paulk, however, who nearly completed the Binghamton comeback. She finished off a three-point play with 3:49 remaining, pulling the Bearcats to within 55-53.
Harris responded by making a layup with 3:20 remaining, putting Stony Brook ahead 57-53. Paulk, who finished with a team-high 11 points, made a pair of free throws on the next possession, making the score 57-55 with 3:03 left to go.
From that point, neither team scored for nearly three minutes. Binghamton turned the ball over on two consecutive possessions during that stretch.
Stony Brook fared no better in terms of shooting but Goodman grabbed a pair of key rebounds in the closing minutes, one of which came off a missed Seawolf free throw.
Harris then sealed the game by making two free throws with 18 seconds left, putting the Seawolves up 59-55.
Swinson and senior forward Kara Elofson each finished with 10 points. Junior guard Jasbriell Swain grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
Jessica Previlon finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort. Goodman added 11 points as did Brittany Snow.
Binghamton shot 52 percent in the second half (10-of-19) but were undone by 26 turnovers for the game.
Stony Brook held a commanding 27-15 lead in bench scoring.
The Bearcats close out their three-game home stand against Maine on Saturday at 4 p.m.
