Shoveling Safety
12/27/2012 (Updated 11:04:48 PM)
Specialists say there is extra strain on the heart while shoveling because of the strenuous exercise, the cold, and the wind.
Try to warm up for five to ten minutes before going out into the cold to shovel.
Also if you are older try and shovel in short periods, take breaks, pace yourself and drink plenty of water.
"Shoveling snow is quite a bit harder than most people realize on the heart it's about the same as running a 9mph pace on a treadmill or outside," said Diane Barton, Exercise Physiologist Supervisor of Cardiac Rehab.
"Start with small amounts if possible really important to squat, use good lifting techniques that we all know but is hard to follow, make sure you bend with your legs, make sure there is no twisting motion, and really just take your time," said Kristen Mooney, Physical Therapist.
If you feel chest pain, shortness of breath, dizzy or light headed make sure to stop and get care immediately.
