A Day with the DOT

BINGHAMTON -- You may have had some trouble on the road after last night's snowstorm..but the conditions are better now thanks to the new york department of transportation.

For most, heavy snow means not going into work. But there are no snow days for snow plow driver rob moss.

"Tired.  By the end of the day i'm pretty much whooped," said Highway Maintenance Worker Rob Moss.

As an employee of  the New York Department of Transportation, Moss works a 12 hour shift starting at 1:30 AM. It takes three hours to do one route, which he does over and over four times-- with no breaks.

"They really work hard to make sure it's the best it can be," said NYDOT Public Information Officer David Hamburg.

But Moss says the hard work is rewarding.

"You get to save people from sliding off the road, crashing, stuff like that. Igot a wife and kids, so I know if they're out travelling I want them to be safe," said Moss.

The DOT says they hope the community appreciates their service.

"When you get behind a plow and the plow is travelling at 25-30 mph, it could be a little frustrating.  But we are there for your safety," said Hamburg.

Officials say if you are driving behind a snow plow, stay at least 50 feet behind, do not pass it, and if you can see their mirrors the driver can see you.

The snow plows will be out again tonight if the snowfall continues.
