BU Women get five point victory, first win of season

BUFFALO, N.Y.  Visiting Binghamton (1-8) placed four players in double figures en route to a 65-60 win at Buffalo (1-9) in a non-conference womens basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The game, which was televised regionally by Time Warner Cable Sports, broke the Bearcats eight-game losing streak.

Sophomore forward Sherae Swinson and junior guard Jasbriell Swain each finished with 11 points while junior guard Vaneeshia Paul k and freshman forward Morgan Murphy each chipped in 10 points. Swain added nine rebounds and a season-high five steals. Swinson and Murphy, meanwhile, each finished with seven rebounds.

This was a great win for us, head coach Nicole Scholl said. We battled back from an early (hole) and played well down the stretch. We settled down and took better care of the ball.
The Bulls broke the game open early with a 10-0 run to go up 17-7 with 12:14 remaining in the first half. Six of those points came off of Bearcat turnovers.

Swain, however, forced a pair of turnovers during an 8-0 Binghamton run in a span of 2:14, trimming the deficit to 17-16 with 10 minutes exactly left in the first half. She then tied the game at 20-20 on an open jumper with 6:35 left before the break.

From there, the game was tied three more times before a rebound basket by Murphy at the 1:05 mark put the Bearcats ahead 28-26. It was a lead Binghamton would carry into the intermission.
In the second half, Binghamton went up 36-30 with 12:43 left in regulation.  The Bulls struggled from the field during that stretch, making just one basket during that span.

Buffalo bounced back, pulling to within 51-50 on a three pointer by Margeaux Guplian with 4:35 left in regulation. From there, however, Paulk scored five straight points, including a three pointer, stretching the lead back to 56-50 with 3:42 remaining.

Christa Buccas pulled the Bulls to within 57-55 on a jumper with 1:18 remaining.  With 47 seconds left, however, she missed the second of two free throws, leaving Buffalo down 58-57.
Gupilan, who finished with a game-high 20 points, sank another three pointer with eight seconds to go, pulling her team to with 61-60 with seven seconds left.

The Bearcats, however, iced the game by going 4-for-4 at the free throw line the rest of the way.

After committing 18 turnovers in the first half, Binghamton settled down and turned the ball over just five times during the final 20 minutes.  The Bearcats also outrebounded Buffalo 43-29.
Binghamton returns home to face Niagara on Monday night at 7 p.m.
