Getting You Car Ready for Winter

(Source: Kate Thornton)

BROOME COUNTY --  It's December in the Northeast and that mean many things.  It can be 60 degrees and sunny one day then 20 degrees and snowing the next.

But, with the official start to winter two weeks away, it's never too early to get your cars ready for snow, sleet, and ice that could come this upcoming winter season.

"When the snow starts to fly, then everyone remembers it needs to be done.  Its' a good idea to get it all done early so you're not trying to get it all done at once," said Matthews Auto Service Manager John Salinas.

The biggest thing Salinas suggests to pay special attention to is your tires.  You have to make sure they have good tread and great pressure.

"You don't want to wait until the tires are worn out.  Obviously you want to get them looked at.  Don't wait until they get down to the bottom.  you want to look at them and evaluate them for snow traction and capability," said Salinas.

Depending on your car, you might want to look into putting on or purchasing snow tires or all weather tires.

Checking your windshield wipers are also very important.  If they are streaking or not working properly, it's time for new ones.

And, remember to check under the hood.  The last thing you want to happen is for your battery to die during a blizzard or sub-zero temperatures.  Have your battery tested because you won't really be able to visually tell if the battery is any good or not.

You'll want to make sure all your fluids are topped off and in good working order.

Once all that done and you're ready to hit the road, New York State Police wants you to remember to clear you car off of snow for good visibility.

"You need to make sure other vehicles can see you as well as you can see them," said Sargent Jason Cawley from Troop C.

Cawley said the biggest factor in winter storm related accidents is speed.

"What we find is during inclement weather people are unaware.  They're go off the road just due to speed.  Take it slow and easy," said Cawley.

Most importantly, you have to prepare to keep yourself safe in case you are stranded or breakdown during cold weather or a winter storm.  Have an emergency kit in your car.  Items in that kit should include:
-A pair of gloves and hat
-An ice scraper or snow brush
-A small shovel
-Extra wiper fluid
-A flash light
-Flares
-Jumper cables
-Extra food and water
