Mayor Ryan vetoes billboard plan

BINGAHMTON -- Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan has said no to a plan to add a billboard nearby a cluster of such signs by Routes 17 and 81 in the city.
 
Ryan vetoed the plan that was approved by Binghamton City Council which would have put a billboard atop a 75-foot pillar rising above the Brandywine Corridor near the highway.

Ryan pointed to the objections raised by both the county and city planning departments as the reason behind his veto.

"We worked with them to put other ones up so it's not like we haven't worked with them before. It's just when you have the County Planning Department and the City Planning Department saying so then you make a mockery out of your planning process," said Ryan.

Ryan said the proposed sign would be right in the middle of a brownfield opportunity area, which the city is working on redeveloping.

An attorney for the billboard company said his clients will try to resolve issues so that the billboard can be erected.
