DOT workers help aid Hurricane Sandy victims

A group of local DOT workers are back in the area after spending much of the last two weeks downstate to help that area recover from Hurricane Sandy.
 
Mechanical supervisors helped prepare generators and other equipment at a staging area in Citi Field in Queens. many worked 16-18 hour days, including shortly after Sandy when a Nor'easter brought three inches of snow to New York City.

"We worked that day I believe 18 hours standing out in the parking lot working on equipment with no shelter whatsoever. But like I said the people were coming to get the stuff as quick as we could get it running. It was definitely needed. Everything we worked on was used," said Stephen Holland of the New York State Department of Transportation.

"It kept us busy and as fast as we kept getting them going and checked out, the NYPD was right there to haul them out and get them to where they were needed," said Walter Terry of the New York State Department of Transportation.
 
Many of the people we talked to at the DOT today said they were happy to return the favor to many around the state who gave to this area during last year's flood.
