More New Yorkers Spending More on Holiday shopping

BINGHAMTON -- Holiday shopping is on everyone's mind this time of year. But just how much shopping are we doing?

"She needs more this year and she knows more [about] what the holiday is," said Alexis Welch of her young daughter.

New research by the Siena Research Institute says more New Yorkers are planning to increase their holiday spending and buy more gifts for more people this year.

"I think it's associated with employment prospects.  They're improving.  so more individuals feel a little more confident," said Christian Harris, Regional Labor Market Analysit for NYS Department of Labor.

According to the Siena Poll, thirteen percent say they will spend more on gifts this year-- which is nearly twice as much as last year.

"I did get a little better job so maybe that will help with it too, there's also more people I'd like to buy for that i couldn't afford in previous years," said 22-year-old Jesse Quealy.

Other shoppers told us they do not intend to spend more this year.

"We're trying to stick to a budget like we do every year.  With the economy and everything everyone's trying to stick to a budget," said shopper Colleen Driscall.

Although the economy is not matching its peaks in years past, local economic experts say it may be back on track.

"There've been gradual improvements over the past few years," said Harris.

And shoppers with newfound employment tell us  they are looking forward to this season of giving.

"If you can afford it, why not spend a little bit more," said Quealy.
