B-Mets relocation rumors flare up... again
11/1/2012 (Updated 11/2/2012 4:03:09 PM)
Over the past year, the popular new destination has been Ottawa, today that fire was rekindled.
Ballparkdigest.com posted a story Thursday-morning claiming with certainty that the B-Mets are in negotiation to be sold and relocated to Ottawa. The group behind the acquisition, Ryan-Sanders Baseball, is owned in part by hall-of-fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.
Binghamton signed a four-year Player Development Contract (PDC) with the New York Mets back in august, but Don Campbell, of The Ottawa Citizen, who's been covering the Ottawa-angle of this story; spoke with Eastern League President Joe McEacharn who told Campbell he's willing to let members renegotiate existing contracts.
"(McEacharn) said today there's two in play. He didn't say Binghamton specifically, but Binghamton always seems to be in play, says Campbell. If you look at attendance around the league you'd figure it was a club in the bottom half. I don't think the PDC's are going to be the stumbling block, it's all about somebody bringing their checkbooks out."
Earlier Thursday afternoon, FOX 40 spoke with B-Mets President, Mike Urda, on the phone. Urda denied the Ballpark Digest report, and said no one in the ownership group has been contacted on possible sale of the club.
