New Section of Runway Opens at Binghamton Airport

Several politicians were on hand at the airport Thursday to unveil some major changes.

Senator Tom Libous, along with County Executive Debbie Preston, and Aviation Commissioner, Carl Beardsley Jr. opened up the new section of runway at the Binghamton airport Thursday morning.

The $12.9 million dollar project extended the runway to 7300 feet.

Officials said  this was an important project that not only helps the airport grow, but also the entire area.

"Where ever the County Executive and I go to talk about bringing in new jobs, creating new careers the airport is the first thing that comes up. this is going to help us to continue to attract bigger and better businesses to this community." said Senator Libous.

The project also makes the airport safer as the engineered material arresting system at the end of the runway was replaced.

That system helps stop a plane before it runs out of runway.
