B-Sens open season with comeback win

BINGHAMTON -- The Binghamton Senators opened the 2012-2013 season with a 2-1 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, giving head coach Luke Richardson his first career win in the American Hockey League.

After a scoreless first period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton struck first in the second with an unassisted goal by center Trevor Smith at 13:08. Their lead didnt last long as Binghamton came back to score two unanswered goals in the third. Left wing Jakob Silfverberg, assisted by Jared Cowen and David Dziurzynski, netted the B-Sens first point at 4:34. Hugh Jessiman, assisted by Mike Hoffman, followed suit a few minutes later with what would become the game-winning goal at 7:31.

Binghamton goaltender Robin Lehner allowed just one goal and made 35 saves on the night to help secure the B-Sens win. For the Penguins, goalie Jeff Zatkoff recorded 23 saves while allowing two goals, coming away with the loss.

The three stars of the game were Binghamton Senators scorers Jakob Silfverberg and Hugh Jessiman and goaltender Robin Lehner. Although Wilkes-Barre/Scranton outshot Binghamton 36-25, the B-Sens put up a fight to give Richardson his first win in Binghamton.

The B-Sens head on the road to take on the Rochester Amerks at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
