NYS Cyber Security Awareness Month

(Source: Kate Thornton)

The Department of Homeland Security is making sure the public is staying safe and secure while surfing the web.

The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergeency Services has declared October to be "Cyber Security Awareness Month" for New York state.

The goal of Cyber Security Awareness month is to help citizens, businesses, government and schools to improve their cyber security.

The Broome County Sheriff's office said it comes across cases of cyber security, including  identity theft and online scams on a daily basis.

"A common online scam is people answering ads on Craigslist for items for sale that aren't legitimate items. It's just something someone posts to try to get cash from you," said Detective James Broderick.

Broderick added that if an online offer seems too good to be true, it most likely is.

In celebration of Cyber Security Awareness Month, the New York State Office of Cyber Security is providing educational resources to the public, including an electronic Cyber Security Toolkit.

The toolkit material can be found on the OCS website: www.dhses.ny.gov/ocs/awareness-training-events/#awareness
