Hanna and Lamb Face Off in First Congressional Debate

CORTLAND -- Today was the first congressional face off between incumbent Republican Congressman Richard Hanna and his opponent, Democrat Dan Lamb.  Both candidates said they were confident with how the debate went.

"What I heard from Mr. Lamb today is one of the most extreme examples of someone who is partisan and proud.  I don't see how that's helpful.  That's exactly what we don't need," Hanna said.

"I think people heard today that I can actually advocate for this region more effectively than my opponent so this was a great opportunity," said Lamb.

The debate was held at he Elks Lounge in Cortland.  The candidates covered a diverse range of topics, including fracking, education, healthcare, transportation, and job creation.

Lamb says that because he comes from a middle class background, he can better understand the needs of the people.

"Congress has the lowest approval rating in history.  It's got a 10 percent approval rating.  It's because of Hanna's work and his opponent's work that have thwarted the economic recovery and prevented us from addressing oppressing needs of this region and of this country," said Lamb.

Hanna said that his decisions as a Congressman are to ensure the success of the people and our country.

"I understand we're paying 400 million dollars per hour in Congress.  Mr. Lamb complains constantly that I voted to cut something.  If you can't cut something you don't belong there.  Because then you become part of the problem," said Hanna.

People who came to the debates here said it was a productive day, and they are happy to learn more about the candidates.

"I do think the amount of information shared was very good and important for an educated voter to make an educated decision on election day," said Cortland resident Jo Schaeffer.

Representatives for Lamb say the next debate between the two is scheduled for the end of October.  Voting for the 22nd district's Congressional seat will take place on November 6th.
